We sold our house, packed up and moved across town to a rental house for what was planned to be one year. We only unpacked the bare essentials and left everything else in boxes in one of the bedrooms.

By February we had a good plan for the layout (after at least 11-12 versions - sorry Manolo!) and a general idea for how we wanted the house to look. We sent it off to the engineer to get the foundation and framing plans drawn and we waited. And we waited. And we waited.
We feel very fortunate to have great neighbors at the new home! And what a small world. Our good friend Bruce is a colleague of one of the neighbors Elaine. She and Mike graciously hosted a dinner for us to meet the neighbors immediately around us.
In October John introduced us to Manolo Banda, a local architect who also appreciates MCM homes. We hit it off immediately and never even talked to another architect. We had worked with Chryssi Eddy on our current home and knew we wanted to work with her again.
Manolo took measurements of the existing home and started working on designs. We started to talk to Chryssi about the finishes and the look we wanted to achieve. And we started working with John to list our existing house. Some time in early September we started having conversations with Kathy about our interest in the house. We learned a lot about Brenda Stubel and started thinking about how wonderful the house could be with a little TLC.
The first of 2 estate sales was scheduled for the end of September and we wanted to have made an offer before that happened. We talked to John about prices and put in what we felt like was a good offer for the house in its current condition and the estate accepted! Because there were two sales planned, we agreed to close at the end of October and lease the house back to the estate until the end of the year. We are lucky to have John Weber as a great friend, who happens to be a realtor with a love and appreciation for mid-century moderns. We started this journey when John called and said, "...there is a house in the Disney Streets that is not on the market, but you guys should take a look..."
We immediately fell in love with the house. |
AuthorWe don't profess to be writers, but will attempt to capture the process in words. It is a lot to build a house so we may have delays in updates. |
